A Sneak Peek Into Our Week...

I hope you all enjoyed the last weekend of summer!  Below is a brief overview of what to expect this week in our classroom.

Reading: Our first official reading unit will begin this week.  Along with our social studies unit, students will be learning about the early days of the Chicago area as we read about Native American tribes that called the area home long before settlers came along.  As they read, they will determine the main idea and distinguish important details from secondary details.  Students will also use text features to make predictions and develop questions about the reading.  Ask your child to tell you which Native American tribe they are studying this week!

Writing: Students will edit and revise the buddy essay they began drafting last week.  Towards the middle of the week, we'll type and publish this piece to the student blogs.  Students will practice editing for common and proper nouns, as well as correct punctuation and formatting.

Social Studies:  Like reading, students will learn about explorers of the land long ago.  They'll discover why ancient explorers left their countries to explore and what effect this exploration had on the world.  These early lessons will lead us to investigate the explorations of Joliet, Marquette, and Jean Baptist DuSable.

Math:  We will continue to plow through Unit 1.  Students will review estimation strategies and strategies for adding multi-digit numbers.  Please make sure your child completes the corresponding Home Link each night.

Read Aloud:  We'll begin a new read aloud this week!  Stay tuned for more details!

40BC:  Just a quick note/clarification- Students should not choose all 40 books ahead of time.  The "book list" is a work in progress,  and should be updated when new books are finished completely.
