Venye

Venye is our Tweetheart this week!  Wish him a happy Tweetheart week if you see him, we are lucky to have him in our classroom!

A Sneak Peek into Our Week...

Happy Rosh Hashanah to all families celebrating!

Reading:  Students will continue to practice finding the main idea and supporting details using a variety of texts and passages.  This week, we'll focus on finding key words and connecting details to infer the main idea when it is not explicitly stated in the text.  They will also continue to use text features, like headings, titles, photos, and bold words, to determine the author's main ideas.

Writing: We are beginning a new unit, Paragraph Construction, this week.  In the unit, students will learn to elaborate ideas and develop thoughtful paragraphs.  This week, students will learn strategies for elaborating and adding detail.  They will also review writing topic and closing sentences, as well as using transition words.

Math:  I will teach the final lessons in our first math unit this week.  Students will review subtraction strategies, points, lines, and rays, as well as measurement concepts.  You can expect a study guide and test date early next week.

Social Studies:  Our lessons this week will center around explorers coming to the Chicago region.  Students will read from, Just Add Water, to learn about Marquette, Joliet, and DuSable.

BOOK FAIR CHANGE: Our class will visit the book fair on Wednesday morning at 9:30am.

PROGRESS REPORTS: Progress Reports go home on Friday.  They will be sent in your child's Friday Folder along with graded work.  Please sign and return Monday.

Second Step Learning: Planning for Success

This week, Ms. Jacobson taught the third graders to be assertive in their learning by planning for success.  She showed them the importance of making checklists that meet the following criteria:

1.  It makes sense.
2.  YOU can do it.
3.  It's simple.

Checklists are extremely helpful in third grade.  If your child is struggling to remember homework or coats and lunch boxes, a checklist in the student planner is a great idea!  Students may also benefit from checklists reminding them to read a certain amount of pages each night in planning for the 40BC.

A Sneak Peek Into Our Week...

I hope you all enjoyed the last weekend of summer!  Below is a brief overview of what to expect this week in our classroom.

Reading: Our first official reading unit will begin this week.  Along with our social studies unit, students will be learning about the early days of the Chicago area as we read about Native American tribes that called the area home long before settlers came along.  As they read, they will determine the main idea and distinguish important details from secondary details.  Students will also use text features to make predictions and develop questions about the reading.  Ask your child to tell you which Native American tribe they are studying this week!

Writing: Students will edit and revise the buddy essay they began drafting last week.  Towards the middle of the week, we'll type and publish this piece to the student blogs.  Students will practice editing for common and proper nouns, as well as correct punctuation and formatting.

Social Studies:  Like reading, students will learn about explorers of the land long ago.  They'll discover why ancient explorers left their countries to explore and what effect this exploration had on the world.  These early lessons will lead us to investigate the explorations of Joliet, Marquette, and Jean Baptist DuSable.

Math:  We will continue to plow through Unit 1.  Students will review estimation strategies and strategies for adding multi-digit numbers.  Please make sure your child completes the corresponding Home Link each night.

Read Aloud:  We'll begin a new read aloud this week!  Stay tuned for more details!

40BC:  Just a quick note/clarification- Students should not choose all 40 books ahead of time.  The "book list" is a work in progress,  and should be updated when new books are finished completely.

A Sneak Peek Into Next Week...

Good Evening Third Grade Families,

Each week I will post a newsletter to share updates and learning content for the week.  Please take a moment to read it.  Have a great weekend!

Literacy:  During the literacy block, students will review choosing "Just Right" books.  They will learn about a long-term book project and become familiar with a variety of genres.  Students will also begin a writing project called, "Me and My Buddy."  I will review topic and closing sentences with students.  They will also review using a variety of sentences within their writing to make it more exciting for the reader.

Math:  We will continue to work through Unit 1 this week.  Please check out the TGW for more information about the unit, as well as links to nightly homework.  Students will review place value concepts and rounding.  Additionally,  students will begin receiving nightly math homework.  Math homework is due the next day unless stated otherwise.  To receive full credit, students MUST SHOW THIER WORK and fully complete the assignment.

Social Studies:  We'll begin our first social studies unit this week.  Students will explore why settlers were drawn to the area that we know as Chicago.

Social Emotional Learning:  Last week students learned to use self-talk when faced with distractions in class.  We will continue to practice this concept.  Additionally, students will learn to be assertive in asking for what they need or want in the classroom.

NWEA Beginning of the Year Assessment:  Students in third grade will take the BOY NWEA Monday and Tuesday of next week.

A Sneak Peek Into This Week...

Welcome to our class family, parents!  I am really excited to get to know you and your family this year.  As your child's teacher, I promise to keep your little loved ones safe and take care of their hearts and minds each day I spend with them.
.
This week, most of our time will be spent reviewing procedures, setting expectations, and getting to know each other.

We'll study Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success and all of the building blocks that go into it.  Please ask your child if he/she can name all 14 building blocks!  You can also take a look at the book we read together if you'd like: Inch and Miles: Journey to Success.  Students will create a poster with their partner to showcase the building blocks.  They will also write a poem defining the words.

During math, students will learn a new math games and practice rotating through stations in math workshop.  They will also study the meaning of keeping a "growth mindset," rather than a "fixed mindset."

On Wednesday, I will distribute student planners to each student.  These planners are to be taken home and returned to school each day.  Please check to make sure your child is keeping up with his/her planner and writing down nightly homework.  This is an important executive functioning skill.  It will help students develop accountability and responsibility for classroom assignments and homework.

Stay tuned for more info throughout the week!
